My wife and I climbed Ganung Batur last year. We started at 2:00am and arrived at the caldera for sunrise. We had breakfast on the top with a family of friendly monkeys and dogs overlooking more volcanos, Batur Lake, the ocean and Lombok island in the distance. 
There were cow skulls strewn about from the annual Hindu sacrifices. Cows, chickens and other animals get pushed into the cauldron to appease the Gods.
I couldn’t understand why I was awake until this point.
I’ll never forget this adventure…..
